Love Hymn

[I wrote this poem years ago as I sat in Burger King eating breakfast.  I wasn't feeling poetic, but I had my journal with me and this poem is what emerged over a crossan'wich and taters.  At the moment, I'm somewhat stressed and wound up (Mahna Mahna is still in intensive care and she has two tiny holes in the walls of her heart).  This poem came to mind and this song did too.  If I can brag on my peeps for a millisecond: when I was in the band Ancient of Days, we did a cover of the Jars of Clay song in the video, and spankin' nailed it!]

Oh newborn infant born to die
Oh glory hid in man’s worn skin
Be thou my guide through life so false
Oh baby king, with love’s bright eyes.

To lower thyself, be born of pain
The universe  within a husk of sand
Before you now, my heart doth bleeds
I run to thee on bended knees.

My life and words oft contradict
Resident of shadows, I live a hypocrite
My heart whispers in pleasures, my mouth stays mute
I run to thee, my death’s substitute.

The tyranny of pride so holds me fast
I try, yet my countenance hangs downcast
I give to thee all, my future in reverse
Oh lover of my soul, I collapse into thy hands

Oh newborn infant born to die
Oh glory hid in man’s worn skin
Be thou my guide through life so false
Oh baby king, with love’s bright eyes.

  1. Great hymn. Especially considering that it was written while eating a croissandwich. You are very talented and I’m glad to read your blog. You are an inspiring guy.

As for lil Lane. Hang in there. Lots of people are praying for your family. She looks bigger and stronger with every picture you post on facebook. She’s growing fast.

Now as for your band days. You were good, I will give you that. I still remember you sitting in the living room, wearing sunglasses while you were talking on the phone. Basking in the afterglow of your first ever gig. I think you might have worn your sunglasses the rest of the day :) And I can’t wait to tell Lil Lane these stories :)
