This past Wednesday was a bit too much. I worked 10 hours at my job, found out our baby girl has two tiny holes in her heart, the temperature outside was somewhere near 500 degrees, my health felt like a see-saw, and I was concerned about my wife’s well being.
So I left the hospital and decided to do some self-care. I know people turn to retail therapy to feel better. My thought is, why spend money on stuff to purchase a feeling you can create for free?
Usually, what I do to create a better feeling is:
-take a nap
-take a shower
(Protip: Do not do all three at the same time. Trust me on this.)
I picked up a box of Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch for dinner. Sometimes, just sometimes, cereal is the best thing you can have for dinner. Esp. Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch because when the milk becomes peanut buttery, that is the free prize (I’m currently reading this book).
I pass the comic book store on the way home and found myself inside. Yes, I know. I succumbed to Dr. Retail’s therapy. But I had to get the next issue of X-men- Schism to find out what happens. And yes, in the past I’ve also visited Dr. Retail at Best Buy as well as other comic book outlets. To quote my 2nd favorite movie of all time, “my hypocrisy knows no bounds.”
As I’m writing this, Mahna Mahna a.k.a. Cadence is home and the three of us made it through a long night together last night. My wife is on the mend and I also received the results of my blood work, my creatinine is 1.8, which is pretty good.
Sometimes, you have to create your own safe place. Self-care is huge in having a healthy relationship not just with yourself, but with other people.
How do you create a space to take care of yourself?
